Sunroof & Moonroof Glass Vancouver
Whether it cracked, leaked, or let go on the highway with a bang, a broken roof panel needs two things fast: weatherproofing today, and the right glass on order. We do both.
What’s included
- Same-day temporary weatherproofing that survives highway speed and rain
- Interior vacuum — headliner, seats, and the sunshade tray
- Roof-system identification — panel, spoiler, or panoramic — sourced by VIN
- Drain-channel check and flush while the roof is open
- Alignment and flushness check so wind noise doesn't move in with the new glass
How it goes, minute by minute
- 1
Weatherproof the opening≈30 min, same day
Shrink film sealed over the roof aperture the day you call — not a tarp that flaps itself to pieces at 60 km/h.
- 2
Identify and order the panellead time quoted at order
Panel, spoiler, or panoramic — many roof panes are special-order through the automaker. We quote the real lead time when we place the order.
- 3
Remove and vacuum≈45 min
The broken panel comes out and we vacuum the cassette, tracks, headliner edge, and cabin. Pellets in the tracks will grind in the mechanism forever if they're left.
- 4
Install and align≈45–60 min
New panel in, adjusted flush with the roof skin in all corners — flushness is what keeps the cabin quiet at speed.
- 5
Flush the drains and water-test≈20 min
All four drain channels flushed and flow-checked, then a controlled water test over the closed roof.
Weatherproofing happens same-day. Install day runs about two hours; if your panel is bonded rather than clamped, we hold the vehicle for the urethane's safe-drive-away window — typically 60 minutes or more, confirmed on the day.
Panel, spoiler, or panoramic — know your roof
An inbuilt (panel) roof tilts and slides back inside the headliner; a spoiler roof tilts up and slides above the roof skin; a panoramic roof spans most of the ceiling with one or more large panes, fixed or sliding. The type decides the part, the labour, and the lead time — panoramic panes especially are big, model-specific, and rarely on a local shelf. We identify yours from the VIN and photos before anything is ordered, so the quote you approve is for the roof you actually have.
The exploding sunroof is a real phenomenon
If your roof shattered with a bang and nothing visibly hit it, you're not imagining things and you're not alone. Large panoramic panes are typically tempered glass — thin, wide spans held under permanent tension. A tiny stone strike you never noticed, an inclusion in the glass, or stress concentrated near the edges and the printed ceramic border can sit dormant until a thermal swing tips it over, and the whole pane lets go at once. It sounds like a gunshot and rains pellets onto the sunshade, which is exactly what the shade is unintentionally good at catching. If it happens on the road: shade closed if you have one, pull over calmly, and don't brush pellets toward the open cassette — they belong to our vacuum.
Drains are the quiet failure
Every sliding roof is designed to let a little water past the glass seal into a gutter tray, which drains through hoses running down the pillars. When those drains clog — pollen, needles, parkade grit — the tray overflows into the headliner and footwells, and the glass gets blamed for a plumbing problem. Since the roof is open anyway during replacement, we flush and flow-check all four drains as standard. One warning worth repeating: never blast sunroof drains with compressed air. It pops the hoses off their fittings inside the pillars, converting a clogged drain into a hidden leak. Gentle line, trickle test, patience.
Questions we actually get
Nothing hit my roof — how did it shatter on its own?
Spontaneous failure of tempered panoramic glass is a documented phenomenon: thin, tensioned panes plus an old micro-impact, an inclusion, or edge stress, triggered by a temperature swing. It isn't something you did, and it doesn't mean the rest of the car is suspect.
Can I drive before the new panel arrives?
Yes, with proper shrink-film weatherproofing — it holds at highway speed and sheds rain. Skip car washes and don't operate the roof mechanism until the new panel is in.
My sunroof leaks but the glass is intact. Same service?
Usually that's drains or seals rather than glass — start with our Water Leak & Wind Noise Diagnosis page. We handle both, and we'd rather find you a drain flush than sell you a panel.
Will the replacement be tempered or laminated?
We source what your VIN calls for. Some automakers have moved panoramic panes to laminated glass, which resists the shatter-and-rain failure mode; where an OE-approved laminated option exists for your roof, we'll present it.
You drive in. We handle everything else.
